Senior AIB Cup – Mon. 8th May 2007
O'Tooles 1-8 V Clontarf 0-8 [ Half Time: 1-2, 0-5 ]
“O'Tooles claim points in low key encounter”
This cup match was played between two sides both eliminated from the senior championship just two days previously and this contributed to very ‘hungover’ performances in a match of little quality. This was manifest most clearly in the low scoreline, poor distribution throughout on the part of both sides and some very wayward finishing perhaps particularly by O’Tooles. To be fair the very tight pitch, which appeared to be just half the size of Naomh Mearnog’s two day’s previously did contribute to the standard of play.
The sides were tied Clontarf 0.5 - O’ Tooles 1.2 at half time, with Clontarf’s scores coming off the boot of Paddy Curran (0.3), Shane Dunlea and Neil Shanahan.
The management team chose to make three changes at half time. Shane McIntyre came in for the ‘pretty poor’ (his own words) Shane Dunlea. And Darren Lambert and Cian Reidy made way to give the two new panelists Ciaran Conway and Shane Kennedy the opportunity to impress. Of the three entrants, Conway was perhaps the most impressive, marking his man tightly and showing further evidence of his ball handling abilities.
However, Clontarf were outscored 0.6 – 0.3 in the second half … and frankly it could have been much worse but for a couple of bad O’ Tooles wides and four top drawer point blank saves from the excellent Rossa O’ Brien in goal.
This said, Clontarf perhaps finished the half strongest slotting over the final two scores – points from Donovan Rossi from an almost impossible position … and Eoghan O’ Grady from a rather easier position! Indeed having worked himself into an excellent position, he blasted the ball over the bar rather than into the net – challenging Mark Coffey’s miss the previous week for ‘miss of the century’.
A pretty poor performance and a disappointing result. The only real positive was the man of the match performance of Rossa o’ Brien in goal.
