Senior AIB Cup – Sat. 31st March 2007
Naomh Maurs 5-13 V Clontarf 3-3 [ Half Time: 0-5, 0-1 ]
“Maurs hit Goal rush”
Clontarf travelled to Rush with the bare minimum of players due to a spate of injuries (7), holidays (3), hurling commitments (1) and suspensions (1).
A vastly understrength team with many players playing out of position, held their own reasonably well for the first half, going in only a point down. However this was not a true reflection of the play of the first half where Clontarf squandered many chances despite playing with a very strong wind. With very few exceptions Clontarf were second to the ball in every area of the park. Only the strong wind against Maurs and their poor shooting kept us in the game.
The second half saw little or no improvement in Clontarfs apetite for the ball and Maurs took full advantage of this and the wind running out winners by 19 points.
Its hard to believe that there were positives to take from this game but there were, with practically every player showing at some point that they have the skills and determination, with strong catching from Shano, Neil Mullins, Stephen McGinn and the Stokes Brothers. At times there were good balls played in, and the forwards showed well but it wasn’t often enough to make any impact on this game. Brian Stokes and Shano in midfield were good on the ball but as with too many other Clontarf players, defensively were found too far away from their opposite number. Conor Glavey acquitted himself well in only his second game as did Robert Stokes.
All in all a poor performance and one that requires an immediate response from the players and management alike. With the next league game on Wedensday night against Erins Isle we won’t have to wait too long to see the resolve of all concerned.
