Senior League Div2 – Report Sat 10th June 2006
Naomh Olaf’s 2-6 V Clontarf 1-15 [ HT: 2-4,1-6 ]
“Clontarf Seniors record third win on the trot.”
The Clontarf Senior Team enjoyed their most emphatic win of the season, so far, with this six point demolition of Naomh Olaf’s, on Saturday evening in Sandyford.
Despite being played under tough conditions, with a rock hard pitch and a very strong wind, both teams helped to serve up a feast of football, to produce a game that was played in a very competitive, but also very sporting manner.
The Clontarf team played the game at such a high tempo that the home side found it very hard to deal with them. They defended in numbers, closing down the Olaf’s forwards at every opportunity, and then broke at pace, mixing fast interchanging hand-passes with long accurate diagonal kicks.
This was as close to ‘Total Football’ Gaelic Football style as you can get.
But whom do you single out for special praise?
Brian Stokes bursting out with the ball from fullback, Ger Ryan running 30yards to make a fingertip interception, the midfield pair of Aidan Morrissey and Ian Smith majestically pulling ball after ball out of the air, Cathal Carr in full flight leaving defenders in his wake, Paddy Curran crashing the ball home for a wonder goal, or Cian Reidy kicking four super points from play.
In truth, this was a complete team performance, with each and every man playing his part in this victory. An indication of this teamwork is that no fewer than seven different Clontarf players got on the score-sheet, with all six starting forwards scoring from open play. Further proof of the work rate and greater fitness of this team is that they restricted the home-side to just two points and two wides for the whole of the second half.
This win puts the team in second place in the league and sets them up nicely for the rest of the season. Well done and congratulations to all those involved with the team.
