Junior B League AFL 9 – Sun. 23rd September 2006
Clontarf 1-5 V Park Rangers 2-11 [ Half Time: 0-1, 0-5 ]
“No Stroll in the Park for Junior B's”
On a weekend when golfing action took centre stage, Clontarf struggled to gather bodies before several minors were drafted in, plus a few seasoned campaigners from those days when the USA owned the Ryder Cup.Park Rangers provided the opposition in a rematch of last years epic encounter, when a rampant Rangers outscored Clontarf on a scoreline of 0-4, 0-1.
Clontarf started the match brightly, dominating the early exchances, but failed to post the necessary scores, missing 3 free kicks and several chances from play. At the other end Park Rangers themselves blazed a number of scorable chances wide. A Clontarf free from Mickey McGlinchey registered the home sides only score of the half, while Park Rangers notched 3 frees and 2 from play to take a 0-5,0-1 half time lead - shades of the 2005 encounter again.
Park Rangers started the 2nd half the more fired up team and registered two excellent long range scores, before a well taken Tarf goal from Donal McSharry cut the deficit to just 3 points. But it was Rangers who took command for the remaining 20 minutes of the game, rattling in 2 goals and slicing throught the Clontarf rear guard. Kevin Monaghan converted 2 late frees for the home side, who never gave up but were outclassed by a confident Rangers side. Ciaran Conway had a fine hour in the Clontarf defence, while wing back David Farrell can be well pleased with his contribution. First half injuries to Mickey McGlinchey and David Shaw were a cruel blow to the Clontarf firepower, who knows the outcome if they had of remained onboard.
So Clontarf's Junior B's have now commenced their descent into winter hibernation. With 5 games left and only 8 points on the board, the danger of a crash landing into the doldrums of division 10 remains a distinct danger to be avoided.
